Understanding Menopause: Symptoms, Stages, and What to Expect

The average age of menopause in the UK is aged 51. The stage leading up to menopause is called peri-menopause and the period of time after menopause is called post-menopause, although the word menopausal is often used to encompass all stages.

Peri-menopause can start years before menopause so it is important to discuss any concerns you may have with your healthcare professional. However, during this time your hormone levels are fluctuating, causing symptoms that can include – but are not exhaustive of – irregular periods, heavier or lighter periods, crying, headaches, insomnia, brain fog, anxiety, hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, low libido and vaginal symptoms. It is important to note that not all women will have noticeable symptoms.

Menopause describes the point in time when the period stops due to the reduction and loss of ovarian function. It is diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a bleed.

Post-menopause is the time after the menopause. Some women may find that their symptoms ease, some may find they still have ongoing symptoms of menopause. However, the risk of cardiovascular disease and bone density loss increases due to the decrease in hormone levels and increase in age.

Access to a specialist menopause service can make a significant difference in managing your symptoms and overall wellbeing.
