Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): What are the risks and benefits?

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the replacement of oestrogen and progesterone – and can include testosterone – and is the first line, most effective treatment to provide effective symptom control for menopausal symptoms. As with any treatment there is an element of risk associated with HRT. This is always worked out on an individual basis. Generally speaking, for most healthy women, the benefits of HRT far outweigh the risks.
Benefits:
- Improves symptoms
- Improves quality of life
- Helps to protect the cardiovascular system
- Helps to protect against bone density loss
- Improves sexual function
Risks:
- This depends on the type of HRT, oral HRT carries an increased risk of clotting but this risk is removed if the delivery of HRT is changed
- Most women are concerned about the breast cancer risk associated with taking HRT. There is a slight increased risk of breast cancer if you take combined HRT which diminishes once HRT is stopped. For a much more detailed discussion book an initial consultation with a Menopause Specialist
